About Papine High

MOTTO: Aim for the Heights Guided by His light.
MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of Papine High School is to provide an environment which ensures that each member of the institution develops to the highest level of his/her potential spiritually, physically and academically, thus empowering him/her to take his/her place in the community, the country at large and the wider world.

VISION STATEMENT: Success for all through commitment and determination.

BRIEF HISTORY: Papine High School was opened on April 10, 1959 as a senior modern school. It is sited on lands adjacent to Hope Botanical Gardens (Hope Estate) and in proximity to the University of Technology, as well as the University of the West Indies, Mona, and the Vocational Training Development Institute. It was designed to accomodate 450 students aged 12-15 years old, but when the doors were opened, enrolment was 659.
The school was the brainchild of the late Right Excellent Norman Washington Manley, then premier of Jamaica. He chose the spot on which to build the school and made sure that all was in place for its establishment. Then Minister of Education, the Honourable Florizel Glasspole, gave his blessing. In 1966, Papine Senior School, as it was then called, was renamed Papine Junior Secondary.
In 1973, the school was granted new-secondary status. Students stayed until 17 years of age.
In 1977, grades 10 and 11 were added and in 1996 Papine Secondary became Papine Comprehensive High and later Papine High School in 1999.

Providing a stimulating learning environment

She started at Papine High School in September 1976 as a teacher of integrated science and mathematics. During the ensuing years, she rose to the position of senior teacher, vice principal and principal in 1991. Mrs. Cynthia Peart has served with distinction and has pioneered several improvements and changes in the development of the Papine High School as it moved through its name changes from secondary to high school. Enrolment now stands at 1,200 and has a staff complement of 100 (academic, administrative and ancillary).

Evaluate our achievements

I believe that all times we must evaluate our achievements and redouble our efforts as we seek to impact our youngsters and communities. A key aspect of our mission is providing a stimulating learning environment that will enhance student's development and empowerment.
At Papine High, we constantly change and upgrade our programmes to suit the needs of our students, thus assisting them to realise their potential.
Hence, each child, in addition to pursuing an academic programme, must learn at least one skill. The achievements and performance of the students in academics, sports and other areas of school life have given much satisfaction. The schools population has benefited from numerous projects and partnerships. Indeed, we have accomplished much over the years. With upcoming opportunities, we will do even more in the development of the school, students and community. It is now clear that the economic situation is having far reaching effects on the lives of many of our students and their families and even some of the programmes that we have undertaken.
We will continue to work purposefully and earnestly as together we must make a difference in the lives of our youngsters.
